Italian trumpeter, flugelhorn player, and composer Paolo Fresu comes from the Corsican tradition of polyphonics. Since the beginning of his career in the early 1980s, Fresu’s Miles Davis-inspired sound has appeared on some 300 albums. Committed to exploring the musical traditions of the Mediterranean, Fresu has found inspiration in classical music (Strauss in particular) as well as in writing for stage and dancers. Also Italian, Daniele di Bonaventura plays piano and bandoneon (the smaller accordion popular in South American music), experimenting with finding bonds between “world” and Latin American music (tango in particular) and jazz improvisation. Together with Fresu, di Bonaventura has accompanied the six-man Corsican choir A Filetta in an experimental reimagining of the region’s polyphonic tradition.
