TD Ottawa Jazz Festival 2015: CéLINE BONACINA TRIO (Improv Invitational Series) at National Arts Centre Fourth Stage - Sat Jun 27 2015 at 6:00 pm
Céline Bonacina - saxophones
Hary Rastimbazafy - drums
Olivier Carole - electric bass
The baritone saxophone has a large and startling tone that is difficult to tame. Few musicians take it on, and those who do must bring to it deftness and personality. For France’s Céline Bonacina, who studied music at conservatories at Belfort, Besançon, and Paris beginning at the age of seven, the baritone sax is the instrument of the Open Heart, as she called her Trio’s 2013 album. The title reflects her relationship to music generally—as a conservatory teacher on Ile de La Réunion in the Indian Ocean, she was active in the Island’s reggae scene even as she was developing her own personal sound in jazz. Joined in the Céline Bonacina Trio by Olivier Carole, a session bassist with a dizzying resume, and Madagascar-born drummer Hary Ratsimbazafy, Bonacina plays with rich lyricism and a commitment to open-hearted expression.
