TD Ottawa Jazz Festival 2015: CLOUDMAKERS TRIO (Improv Invitational Series) at National Arts Centre Fourth Stage - Wed Jun 24 2015 at 6:00 pm
Jim Hart - vibraphones
Dave Smith - drums
Michael Janisch - bass
Composed of three of the UK’s most in-demand and demanding rhythm players, Cloudmakers Trio is the brainchild of percussionist Jim Hart, pitting him on vibraphone in vigorous altercation against drummer Dave Smith, with U.S.-born bassist Michael Janisch called upon to mediate between the two. Playing Hart’s compositions, Cloudmakers Trio engage in what The Guardian called “a brilliant game of rhythmic hide-and-seek.” As a composer, Hart is committed to expanding both New York and European jazz traditions, while his frequent collaborator Smith marries an experimental intuition to deep passion for West African rhythms that has made him a collaborator in demand from a wide variety of artists, including Robert Plant. Bassist Janisch meanwhile, has co-led groups with Lee Konitz and performed alongside Quincy Jones. As a trio they push and pull their sounds between free jazz, melody, and aspects of rock & roll rhythm.
