It’s Southern gospel music meets New Orleans rhythm when two mighty musical organizations come together to meld voices and brass. Created in 1944 at the Alabama Institute for the Blind, the Blind Boys of Alabama have won five Grammy Awards and collaborated with musicians as diverse as Aaron Neville and Lou Reed. Two original members remain in the group that has travelled the world to spread the band’s joyful sound. Formed in 1977, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band is a relative newcomer by comparison. With its roots in the social clubs and second line marching units of the Crescent City, the Dirty Dozen Brass Band has set itself apart by stretching to reinterpret music by artists like Marvin Gaye and by appearing with musicians like the Black Crowes and Widespread Panic. Together, the groups take audiences on a journey to the roots of American blues and jazz.
