For a few years in the late 1970s, it seemed like Huey Lewis and members of his backing band might be destined to be little more than answers to UK rock trivia questions, given Lewis’s role as harp player on a Thin Lizzy tour and Clover’s role as the backing band on Elvis Costello’s debut recording. But then, 19 top-10 singles came along, and Huey Lewis & The News all but owned the airwaves in the 1980s. The group’s breakthrough album, Sports, sold 10 million copies in the U.S., and spawned four huge hits, including the anthemic “I Want A New Drug” and “The Heart of Rock & Roll.” The inclusion of songs in the hit film Back to the Future broadened the band’s exposure even further. By 1986, the band was ubiquitous. Few acts can sustain that level of popularity, but Huey Lewis & The News have continued to cultivate a loyal following, especially in their native Bay Area.
