Jamie Cullum

An irrepressible force onstage, 35-year-old pianist/singer Jamie Cullum is the kind of polymorphic performer who seems ideally suited to the contemporary media environment. Photogenic and charismatic, the native of Wiltshire, England, hosts his own BBC radio program, headlines at Madison Square Garden alongside Billy Joel, and showcases his photography in his own magazine. The UK’s only platinum-selling jazz artist, Cullum’s taste is extraordinarily diverse – stretching from Cole Porter to Jimi Hendrix, and from John Zorn to Alice Coltrane. His current album, Interlude, marks his debut on Blue Note Records and finds him working with the acoustic groove group Nostalgia 77 and singers Gregory Porter and Laura Mvula. The material mines vintage Ray Charles and Duke Ellington, but Cullum’s approach is decidedly contemporary. “I am not a great technician,” Cullum told DownBeat magazine recently. “My strongest suit as a singer is connecting…. I know how to put a lyric over.”
