The members of Los Angeles’s Kneebody were teenagers when they formed in 2001, and their music reflects the spirit of the omnivorous period in which they came of musical age. With strong foundations in funk, bebop, and fusion jazz, Kneebody play comfortably with elements of electronica and hip-hop, and both post-rock and delightfully un-ironic rock. But among the cooler sounds there are strains of careful study, heard in nods to minimalism and mid-century modernism. The dizzying variety of influences may make describing them a mess, but the music they produce goes down like hearty and satisfying stew. Kneebody thrives on enthusiasm for the many sounds its members have devoured for years with complex palates, and their gusto for playing makes them a habitual hit with audiences—whether of their fervent fan-base, or of strangers hearing them for the first time.
