TD Ottawa Jazz Festival 2015: MARIA JOãO & MáRIO LAGINHA (Improv Invitational Series) at National Arts Centre Fourth Stage - Mon Jun 22 2015 at 5:00 pm
Maria João - vocals
Mário Laginha - piano
The musical partnership between Portugal’s Maria João & Mário Laginha has spanned nearly a third of a century and more than 10 albums. João is known and loved primarily as a jazz singer with acrobatic improvisational skill, though she has performed across many genres since she began her career at Lisbon’s Hot Club Jazz School—reaching out across electronic, avant-garde, folk, and ethnic sounds. Her many collaborators have included Gilberto Gil, Bobby McFerrin, and Aki Takase. But João’s most serious collaborator has always been pianist and composer Mário Laginha, whom she began working with in 1983. While 11 of Laginha’s 18 albums have been with João, he has experimented with a variety of sounds linking jazz and classical piano forms—particularly in his longstanding partnership with classic pianist Pedro Burmester, though also with many others, including Wayne Shorter and Trilok Gurtu.
