Bio

Saskatchewan-born pianist and composer Renee Rosnes gained a reputation for her hard-bop and post-bop playing soon after moving to New York in 1986. But even before that, in Vancouver in the early ‘80s, she had been lucky enough to sit in with legends, including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, and Oscar Peterson. After relocating to New York, however, she got serious about supporting a roster of major names—Joe Henderson, Wayne Shorter, and J.J. Johnson among them. In 1989, she joined James Moody’s quartet, and remained a member of the group until Moody’s passing in 2010. In her home country, she has won four Juno Awards, as well as being named the 2003 SOCAN Composer of the Year. That’s no surprise considering the kinds of words critics continue to apply to her work: “delicacy and power,” “glorious and soulful.”
